This Story has No Payoff, It’s just a thing that happened

Getting Tacos in Capitol Hill. It’s a real family joint, they got the big grill three feet from the register, right in view, they’re doing a million orders at once, and most of them don’t speak english, except for the register guy who kind of speaks english, and there’s a big gay festival happening in this neighborhood this weekend so they’re beyond swamped, and I’m waiting in line for way too long, hungry, sick, self conscious, feeling attractive and a bit too seen by every human in this dense room, and i’m still in line, and i notice there was a fucking kiosk I could’ve ordered from the whole time.

God damn it. I’m at the front of the human line anyway though, so I might as well stick with it, is what I think, until this bitchy little adult girl parks up beside me with a pouty look on her face and outstretched hand holding her plate of tacos resentfully up towards the lone register guy who’s also filling horchata and now i guess she’s in front of me and after like 12 moments of uncomfortable silence in which i said nothing to her she does get the guy’s attention and she’s like: I ordered these tacos without cheese. I’m vegan. I can’t eat this. And he’s like can I see your receipt and she’s like it was on the kiosk. And he’s like okay and they go check the kiosk and I’m just standing there thinking holy shit i am never going to get my tacos, because even once i finally do order i’m going to be behind like 12 people who just ordered anyways,

BUT they sort their thing out, she hands her tacos to the guy and i’m like hey are those spicy? he’s like what? no. there’s no jalapeno? he’s like no. I’m like can i have them. can I just have her tacos so I can eat food and leave. instead of you throwing them away. and he’s like sure man. and so he just hands me her plate of three delicious uneaten bean and cheese and all types of other good stuff tacos. for free. and i exit the building with a big smile on my face and go eat them outside with the local homeless. the end.
